Overview

BookWord is a foreground reading companion that listens for a single spoken word and shows its definition. BookWord does not operate advertising, analytics, account, or backend services. We do not collect personal information or receive your voice recordings, recent words, or settings.

1. Microphone and Speech Recognition

BookWord requests microphone and speech-recognition permission only after you start a reading session. It uses Apple’s speech-recognition services to turn a spoken word into text. Recognition may occur on your device when iOS supports it or may be processed by Apple according to your device settings and Apple’s privacy practices.

BookWord only listens while the app is open and a reading session is active. Listening can be paused at any time. BookWord does not save, retain, or provide the developer with microphone audio or voice recordings.

2. Data Stored on Your Device

BookWord stores the following information locally on your iPhone so the app can operate:

This information is not sent to the developer or to an analytics service. There is no BookWord account or cloud sync.

3. Dictionary and Spoken Definitions

Definitions are looked up in a bundled, offline WordNet database. BookWord can read a definition aloud using the iPhone’s system speech voices. Dictionary searches and spoken-definition preferences remain on your device.

4. Data We Do Not Collect

BookWord does not collect:

BookWord does not track you, sell data, or share personal information with advertisers or data brokers.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

Recent words and preferences remain on your iPhone until you remove them by deleting the app or through any controls provided by iOS. The developer has no server copy and cannot retrieve this information on your behalf.

6. Children’s Privacy

BookWord is a general-audience reference utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

7. Security

BookWord’s saved information is protected by your iPhone’s security features, including device encryption and your passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. BookWord does not operate a remote database containing your reading activity.

8. Third-Party Services and Content

Apple provides microphone permission, speech recognition, system speech voices, and App Store distribution under Apple’s Privacy Policy. Dictionary content is provided by Princeton WordNet under its applicable license. BookWord does not include third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
